The Gloss

Fashion and beauty, written by people who mean it.

✦ ◇ ✦
Our Story

We started The Gloss because we were tired of reading about clothes and beauty products written by people who hadn't thought carefully about either.

The fashion and beauty media landscape is not short on volume. It is short on honesty. The press releases move faster than the thinking. The affiliate links move faster than the press releases. Somewhere in the machinery of it all, the actual work — the clothes, the craft, the culture — gets lost.

We believe that fashion and beauty deserve the same rigor, care, and editorial independence that we expect from any other form of serious cultural writing.

The Gloss publishes editorial writing about fashion and beauty. That means reviews of things we actually purchased or were genuinely invited to experience. It means criticism that has a point of view. It means profiles of designers and makers whose work merits attention even when no publicist is asking us to write about it.

We cover beauty in the same spirit — not as a checklist of products but as a cultural practice with history, texture, and meaning. The way women take care of themselves, and the industries built around that act, tell us something real about the world we live in.

We don't take sponsored content. We don't have an affiliate program. We don't accept gifted product in exchange for coverage. These are not difficult decisions — they are simply the cost of being able to write things that are actually worth reading.

The Gloss is independent. It always will be.

Editorial Standards

What We Stand For

01

Editorial Independence

No sponsored content. No affiliate links. No brand partnerships that compromise what we write. The only thing we owe our readers is an honest account of what we think.

02

The Work First

We cover clothes, products, and ideas that merit attention on the merits — not because a publicist secured placement. The work earns the coverage, not the other way around.

03

Actual Writers

Every piece in The Gloss is written by someone who cares about the subject. We don't produce content. We publish writing. There is a difference, and we think it matters.

Write for The Gloss

The Gloss accepts pitches from writers with a genuine point of view. We're looking for essays, criticism, profiles, and reported pieces — not listicles, not product roundups. If you have something to say about fashion or beauty that you haven't seen said well elsewhere, we want to hear from you.
